THE TIPPING POINT

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS RIGHT THERE IN THE BOX SCORE.

TONIGHT, JOSE REYES WAS 3-FOR-6 WITH A WALK. DAVID WRIGHT WAS 3-FOR-6. ANGEL PAGAN WAS 2-FOR-5 WITH A HOME RUN. CARLOS BELTRAN HOMERED. ALL OUR STARS PERFORMED LIKE STARS.

BUT WE LOST. WHY??

LUIS CASTILLO WAS 1-FOR-6. HE LEFT FIVE METS ON BASE.

JEFF FRANCOEUR WAS 0-FOR-5. HE LEFT FOUR METS ON BASE.

With the bases loaded in and two outs in the eighth, Luis Castillo had one of the most pathetic at-bats I have ever seen. He was up there begging, praying for Kyle McClellan to throw ball four. He didn't. Castillo should just be happy that McClellan didn't knock the goddamned bat out of his hands.

With two men on base and two outs in the ninth, Jeff Francoeur flew out to shallow right. I DO NOT CARE HOW MANY PITCHES (some of which were balls) HE FOULED OFF. IT DOES NOT MATTER. ALL HIS AT-BATS ARE GARBAGE.

In the tenth, Reyes was thrown out stealing second because with two outs and himself on first, HE KNEW that Castillo stood no chance of getting the ball out of the infield and figured he might as well try to get to second base.

After the tenth, everyone sucked, so it's hard to point fingers.

All I know is that watching Castillo and Francoeur at the plate with two outs and men on base in three consecutive innings absolutely sucked all the will to live out of my body. I can't watch them. It's a travesty.

Yes, Santana got jumped on in the first inning. But he kept us in the game. The bullpen kept us in the game. And at one point - we tied it up. In the bottom of the eighth, before Castillo had the first of his sad, train-wreck at-bats, the Mets had just tied the game. They had the momentum. The game was ours. The Mets were back.

You know how it ended. I used to be indifferent to Mets fans who liked Francoeur and who thought his happy-go-lucky attitude helped us win games. From now on, if someone says anything positive to me about him, I will be firmly convinced they've never watched a game.

I'm sick. I don't know how the Mets will ever win a game with Castillo and Francoeur both in the lineup, equally spaced to absolutely shred my heart in alternate innings.

A few things I think Mr Mangan should also point out here:

1 - for what its worth, and I didn't see a lot of replays, I thikn Reyes was safe at second in the 10th. In terms of the strategy, as Gary Cohen said there were a bunch of righties about to come up against a lefty. Better to leave that (we hoped) gauntlet to come up with no outs than 2 unless you coan win the game on just one hit.

2 - Don't forget Henry Blanco's at bat in the first inning with the bases loaded. A hit there changes the game drastically, or at least makes it 6-3 and we clear the pitcher. Our catchers were a combined 0 for 5 with a walk last night.

3 - The 8th inning rally only even happened because Holliday dropped a Castillo fly ball. Nit picking there, but still - the final is 7-4 if he makes that catch.

Castillo also grounded into a double play the inning before Beltran's Homer, killing momentum.

4 - I stand by Francuer's the better outfielder on defense than Bay. That cannon attached to his arm has got to be worth something.

The only other (negative) comment I can think of from last night's game is the double play weirdness in extra innings. They seemed able to turn every other double play, usually after failing one earlier in the inning.
